We also play word games now that Charlie can read. Even before we worked on letter/number recognition....I'd say "Can you find the letter B?" and when he saw it Charlie would shout it out. Kinda like the I Spy game.
I bought a cheap lap tray at Hobby Lobby that actually fits over the car seat. Crayons and coloring books work that way. I do haul out the portable DVD player for drives over 3 hours oneway.
