Stoping by the Grocery Store on a Busy Evening
I was at the grocery store checkout visiting with the checkout clerk. I see her most every week, but I don't know her name. Shame on me.
"I've got miles to go before I sleep," I said.
"Oh, yeah," she comiserated. Her checkout line was long and her shift just starting. "Who said that?" she asked. "Was it John F. Kennedy?"
"Close enough," I answered.
Remember a time when poetry was widely read, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath. She and I both know these words. What are our cultural Frost quips of today? Are we richer for our Ipods, blogs and facebook? Do we read more or less? I think about this.

I worry about this often.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Will poetry ever make a comeback.
